TRADITIONAL PASSENGER FERRIES AT ISTANBUL, TURKEY
Two ships near the end of their last full seasons in October
2009 were MV Pasabahce, below left, and MV Maltepe, below right.
|
|
|
|
MV Pasabahce was built in Taranto, Italy and came into service in 1952 |
MV Maltepe was built locally by Istinye Shipyard in 1962 |
Following close on the heels of the withdrawal of MV Fenerbahce, the loss of its two most venerable fleet members left the newly hived-off organisation running Istanbul's "conventional" passenger ferries, Istanbul Sehir Hatlari, formed in September 2010, with a substantial fleet including substantial new tonnage - but no ship built before 1973. In 2009, the company, whilst still part of the local IDO transport company and designated as "City Lines", took delivery of five modern vessels, almost similar in length to Maltepe and remarkably similar in design despite almost 50 intervening years. The design was heavily influenced by local opinion - the company had canvassed interested parties for their input - and it is clear that traditional lines remained popular alongside the futuristic design of the fast ferries being introduced on longer services into the Sea of Marmara.

Small ferry : Leased to the city of Yalova for a ferry service to local islands in the Marmara sea from March 1, 2009. The service ceased from 30th March amidst financial problems and turmoil following local elections and the ship remains tied up with no fee having been paid to IDO Istanbul. |

STEAMSHIPS ON THE BOSPHOROS FERRY SERVICE
|
Prior to the introduction of motor ships, there
was a long history of steam on the Bosphoros ferry service and even
in 1961, nine years after the introduction of MV Pasabahce and eight
after MV Fenerbahce, eight steamers were ordered from the Fairfield
yard in Glasgow, Scotland. One of the eight, SS Kuzguncuk, is seen
right in 1994. These ships became very popular, especially with
local ferry enthusiasts and two remain in preservation, although
sadly without their engines. |
